Graduate Automation Engineer

Full job description

Rutland Plastics is one of the UKs leading Injection Moulding companies manufacturing parts for customers across every sector with parts ranging from 1g to 45kg and 1.5m in size.

Role Overview:

As a Graduate Automation Engineer, you'll be immersed in all engineering disciplines essential for creating bespoke automation solutions. While the requirements may seem extensive, we welcome candidates with varying levels of expertise, prioritising enthusiasm and a willingness to learn.

Mechanical Engineering

Mechanical design will be the starting point of most projects. As a team we come up with ideas for new automation projects, these ideas are modelled using Fusion 360 and along with costing information they are then presented for approval.

Most parts will be manufactured in our tool room which is equipped with an array of manufacturing equipment e.g. lathes, CNC machines.

Key mechanical skills

  • 3D modelling using Fusion 360
  • Part drafting for manufacture - GD&T
  • Basic FEA to verify designs.
  • Knowledge of gears, belts and other motion related components.
  • Motion related calculations eg. motor torque and speed specifications.

Electrical Engineering

All systems are built to relevant ISO standards and you will be expected to become familiar with the relevant directives and standards. We use the inherent safe design process, starting with a risk assessment to eliminate hazards at the design stage then specifying a safety control system to mitigate the remaining hazards.

Over time you will learn to design control cabinets from start to finish. Specifying power supplies and circuit protection, becoming familiar with commercially available sensors, controllers, transducers, drives and peripherals.

Key electrical skills/attributes

  • Exposure to any electrical cad software
  • Willingness to learn and work to the relevant standards and directives(CE marking, PUWER)
  • Experience of panel wiring and crimping

Software and Robotics

Cobots have now take a central role in the automation of the factory, Rutland Plastics was an early adopter of collaborative robots in the plastics industry.

As we never know what the next project will be, it is important that you have the drive to learn the full capability of each Cobot and push your application of this knowledge to expert level.

PLC programming will become an increasingly important part of this role as well as learning and implementing field bus technology (e.g., Modbus TCP, Ethernet IP) to communicate between devices.

Role Requirements

You must have a good engineering degree in a relevant discipline with an intrinsic interest and intuitive understanding of engineering, underpinned by an academic theoretical knowledge base. Delivering new automation is never easy and you must have a positive approach to problem solving. As problems occur they have to be met with creative solutions, multiple ideas and an agile mind, this is essential to deliver successful automation in a timely manner.

We are looking for those who have an active interest in how things work. Do you have a few projects on the go with an Arduino or are you always rebuilding engines and working on home DIY projects? If so, we would love to hear about it. Be sure to include any personal projects with your application.

In return we are offering a salary up to £30,000 (depending on skills and experience), 32 days holidays (including bank holidays), company pension, private health insurance, Employee Assistance Programmes including death in service insurance and on-site parking.

If you have relevant experience for this role we would like to hear from you. Please apply through Indeed. Send in a covering letter summarising your experience and personable qualities, along with your CV and available start date FAO Jamie Hooper.
